Advanced course in Media Law:

Short Course (3 days full-time)

A daytime course for those with basic knowledge of media law. Students will either be existing journalists, or will have obtained some understanding of media law from previous studies.

Day 1: Introduction: you and the law, Privacy and breach of confidence, Human Rights Act. Freedom of Information, terrorism and national security, codes of conduct. Crime and the courts, sex offences, ASBOs and children in court.
Day 2: Libel cases, libel defences. Reporting the courts.
Day 3: Copyright, challenging court orders. Libel and contempt. Conclusion.

Assignments: Students will be expected to undertake some background reading and short practical exercises in preparation for the course.

Books: McNae's Essential Law for Journalists and Media Law course notes (London School of Journalism). Cost included in course fees.
